Update August 24, 2010
This past week, since the last update, was a time of celebrating and acclimating ourselves to the boys' move to Tulsa. Cameron was more active than Benjamin, being able to tolerate sun and activity a little more than before; but he still has to use caution with his hands as they are still very sensitive. Benjamin avoided the sun as much as possible and needed very little pain medicine. His right foot becomes very sensitive by the end of the day because it doesn't have any callous except on his heel. But other than that, both boys are getting stronger every day.

Benjamin avoided the sun as much as possible and needed very little pain medicine. His right foot becomes very sensitive by the end of the day because it doesn't have any callous except on his heel. But other than that, both boys are getting stronger every day.

On Thursday, we had a celebration for them with friends and family. Both dads cooked out and God multiplied the food! It was a great time of fellowship and rejoicing. Cameron and Benjamin showed pictures of the truck and their hospital stay. It was a real eye-opener to most of our guests, but also a huge testimony to how far God has brought them.
This weekend, Cameron's parents loaded a trailer with replacement furniture and belongings for Cameron. They also found him a used truck to take to Tulsa. Benjamin's truck was brought to Seminole after release from the hospital (Daphne used it to drive around Oklahoma City during her stay). So with four vehicles lined up (parents and boys), our caravan pulled out of Seminole yesterday morning to make the drive to Oklahoma.
We arrived at the hospital for wound care late in the day. There was a misunderstanding with our appointment, so the doctor wasn't available, but he had one his burn nurses evaluate the boys. Cameron got his arm bandages off! He still has one spot on his elbow that he has to keep doctored and covered with a large bandaid, but it is smaller than last week and is healing well. The nurse thought Benjamin looked great, so she released him to wear compression sleeves on his leg now (which means he can finally wear pants instead of just shorts). The doctor instructed the nurse that unless she saw something that required them to come back when he was there, they could be released for a month! Hallelujah! Nine weeks to the day, the boys are free from hospitals and weekly appointments!
We then drove the rest of the way to Tulsa to see the new house Benjamin's roommates moved him into over the summer. It is very nice, with four bedrooms and a backyard. After a celebration dinner, we unloaded Cameron's bed from the trailer to his room and left the boys there and went to the hotel. We will spend a couple more days in Tulsa to help them get settled in their house and purchase belongings lost in the fire that haven't been replaced yet. We also plan to go to Rhema Church with them Wednesday to celebrate there also.
School starts for Benjamin on September 7th. He will not be able to work for awhile so he plans to go to classes in the morning and Prayer & Healing School in the afternoons. Cameron will also have to wait a little bit before looking for a job. He will not be attending Rhema right now, but we're so glad he will be living with Benjamin and friends.
As parents, we want to thank you again for your prayers and support. We will never forget the Summer of 2010 and God's deliverance. You all played an important part in the success Benjamin and Cameron have had. The road of healing is still outstretched before them, but we are confidant they will not only make FULL recoveries, but GIVE ALL THE GLORY TO GOD!

Update August 16, 2010
What a glorious day! We have turned another corner... We brought both boys to Oklahoma City last night for their wound care appointments this morning. Benjamin's doctor inspected his leg and decided to leave it open (for the first time since the accident - 8 weeks ago today). Benjamin walked out of the hospital in zero bandages :) The burned areas are a little tough to look at, but they need to "dry out" and allow the skin to toughen up. Benjamin will still have to avoid sunlight. The doctors said all his skin grafts would have to be replaced if he was in the hot sun for even 10 minutes. But with the bandages removed, he can now work on getting more flexibility in his toes and ankles. His goal is to play the drums in full capacity real soon.
Cameron's doctor inspected his elbow again and decided to try a different antibiotic pad over it to encourage better healing. We prayed over him that this week will be his last time to be bandaged... that when they open him up next week, "His skin shall be fresher than a child's and return to the days of his youth..." (Job 33:25).
We all enjoyed being home for the past six days. It took some adjustment at first to get reconnected - it was like we'd been holding our breath, and now we could breathe for the first time in a long time.
Our plans now are to come back through OKC for another wound care appointment the first of next week and then move the boys to Tulsa. Rhema Bible Training Center, Benjamin's school, starts after Labor Day so he still has a couple of weeks to get ready. We feel like both boys will not be able to work for a while, but Rhema has Prayer & Healing School in the afternoons that they can attend regularly.
Thank you for your continued prayers!

Update August 10, 2010
We left the hospital on Friday very excited... After taking Benjamin's things to the hotel, we thought we could celebrate at the Cheesecake Factory but it was a little too much for Benjamin (sensory overload!) so we got it to go and enjoyed our first meal together, outside the hospital, at the hotel. Since he has mostly been sitting or lying in a bed with his leg propped up, the blood pressure in his leg was very painful on Friday and most of Saturday, so we ordered in and enjoyed relaxing. By Sunday, he was feeling better and at some points the blood pressure was zero. We got out about three times for short errands and some sunshine (in the air conditioned car, of course). On Monday, Benjamin's pain level was much less so we pushed a little bit more activity to prepare him for the anticipated seven-hour drive home on Tuesday.
This morning we went to his first outpatient appointment. When they un-bandaged his leg, we were amazed at how much better it looked from Friday! Although his leg still needs quite a bit to be fully healed, the coloring and overall look of his leg was greatly improved. The doctors re-dressed his leg and his upper right arm and said, "SEE YOU ON MONDAY!" We had already packed our bags at the hotel in faith! The seven-hour drive home went quick and smooth. Benjamin will be with us in Seminole for 2-3 weeks before returning to Tulsa for Bible School. We anticipate weekly wound cares visits to the hospital as he continues the healing process from home.

Update August 6, 2010
OH HAPPY DAY! Benjamin's lung doctor came in at 7:50am and pulled his trach out. Then, at 8:15am, the burn doctor came in, inspected his leg, and released him to the hotel as an outpatient until Tuesday! PRAISE GOD! We immediately called Benjamin's dad, who was in Seminole, and decided to wait until he could make it to Oklahoma City before leaving the hospital. Benjamin has bandages over his trach site, upper right arm, and all of his right leg (from the knee down). He was given a cotton sleeve to protect his lower right arm and hand from the sun and nicks. He can walk pretty well; but he can't stop and stand still for long because the blood flow to his leg and foot is still painful. When he's sitting, he prefers to keep his leg propped up. Other than that, he looks great in regular clothes (no more hospital gowns)!
Cameron and his family drove in last night for his appointment with Wound Care. Cameron's bandages on his right arm were removed and replaced with a cotton sleeve. His left elbow is still bandaged but it is healing very well and may be opened next week.
We are so happy to have both families here for this big day! Thank you for all your support and prayers. We will continue to update this page at least once or twice a week to keep everyone in the loop of their continued healing.

Update August 5, 2010
We were informed Benjamin's lung doctor comes by every-other day, so we didn't see her on Tuesday, but she did come by yesterday. She is ready to pull his trach, but since he is still in the hospital on IV antibiotics she decided to wait until Friday in order to give the incision site opportunity to close a little more (to minimize scarring). Also, his burn doctor opted to wait until tomorrow to open his leg bandages. There is a 50/50 chance he will tell us we can be dismissed... he may want to wait a couple more days to finish the antibiotics by IV instead of oral. Either way, we are hopeful! We have been getting Benjamin out of his room more, wheeling him around to different areas of the hospital. Last night, we took him to the cafeteria atrium and actually ate our dinner at a table together. That was very nice :)
Cameron and his family are on their way back to Oklahoma City for his check-up in the morning. It will be good to see them.

Update August 3, 2010
Thank you for your prayers... Benjamin's protein levels were higher than they've been so a feeding tube wasn't needed! The doctor did start a seven-day IV antibiotic for the infection (presumed to be staff -- a culture was taken today). But in just two days, we can already see a difference in his coloring and pain level. Yesterday, the lung doctor ordered x-rays to look at his trach and we think she will be by in the morning to remove it. Our regular doctor is on vacation, so the other burn specialist looked at Benjamin's leg today. There was still a large spot on his shin that was open but the signs of infection were much, much less. And, after being exposed to air for a few minutes, the area began to dry which means skin cells are present and a need for more grafting is unlikely. They re-dressed Benjamin's leg and the doctor plans to look again in a couple of days... and then we should know how much longer until he's released!

Update August 1, 2010
We've let a couple of days pass since the last update in order to share more at one time. Benjamin's lung doctor came in the day after his skin graft surgery to "cap" his trach - this means he is breathing all on his own. We were told his trach would be removed early this week (maybe as early as tomorrow).
Cameron came for his appointment and had to have some extra bandages applied to an area on his arm where the skin was nicked accidently. The doctor also said the skin graft around his elbow wasn't taking very well due to the nature of it's location around a joint. They applied more treatment bandages and scheduled another appointment for him in a week.
The bandages around Benjamin's recent skin grafts were opened this morning (the doctors always wait at least three days after surgery). Unfortunately, it was not as healed as they had anticipated. He had several new spots where the skin was torn and open. It appears he has a small infection fighting against him. The doctors re-dressed his leg and upper arm with instructions to check his protein levels tonight. Benjamin has lost close to 19 pounds since being admitted to the hospital. He is eating well, so we expect his protein levels to be fine. However, if his levels have dropped, the doctor will re-insert his feeding tube tomorrow to help his body fight the infection. Please be in agreement with us that his levels will be good (and even better than expected) and no feeding tube will be necessary.
The doctor said he will still need to stay at least another week. Today marks six weeks in the hospital. But on a good note, Benjamin was given a hall pass that allows us to wheel him anywhere around the hospital. Yesterday, we found some nice waiting rooms upstairs that had great views and plenty of light. Changing our scenery lifted our spirits.

Update July 29, 2010
Benjamin's surgery went very well. The doctor took skin from the outside and back of his left thigh and made grafts for his knee, back of his calf, bicep, a couple of places on his forearm, and a couple of toes (all on the right side). The best news was that his pre-op nurses all congratulated him because their paperwork said this was his last surgery! Praise God! When he returned to his room, he had two IV ports (one original and one from anesthesia). The nurses gave him morphine for pain in one of the IV ports and his skin immediately turned red and began to whelp. When they tried the other one, it did the same. It seems he developed a temporary allergy. The nurses were quick to get the IV's removed and a new one put in with new medication, but he stayed in pain for about an hour (remember the donor site is more painful than the skin graft after surgery). When the medicine finally took, he ate, went back to sleep, and was later in great spirit. Thank you for praying for him.
Cameron will return tomorrow for a check-up on his skin grafts. Please pray his grafts have healed and taken completely.

Update July 28, 2010
After getting over the initial disappointment of finding out Benjamin needed another surgery, the past two days have been very good. Benjamin's biggest issue is the itching associated with new skin growth - a good problem to have! After two days under bandages, the doctor re-opened his arm and leg today and found some areas needing less grafting than he first thought on Monday. And, while his bandages were off Benjamin noticed that his pain level was not as severe as it used to be when his burns were left open to the air. This is progress! So, his sixth and final surgery will be tomorrow afternoon and the nurses suspect Benjamin's lung doctor will want to remove his trach on Friday (it actually tried to remove itself twice today)! Thank you for your continued prayers :)

Update July 26, 2010
We didn't quite get the news we had hoped for... but we won't lose hope. Benjamin will have another skin graft surgery this week to re-graft four areas (one around his right knee, one down the back of his right calf, and two on his right forearm where the skin tore last week). As a result of this, he will remain hospitalized for at a couple more weeks. We haven't heard from the lung doctor yet regarding removing his trach; they may wait until after this surgery as a precaution. Benjamin has been up walking a few times a day. He usually needs some pain medication before or after, but the goal is to keep his skin from getting too tight around the joint areas. He will probably take some extra laps these next couple of days since after surgery he will have to remain bedfast for at least 3 days while the skin grafts take.
Cameron came in this morning for a check-up on his skin graft areas. The doctor said most of it was healing well except for a couple of spots that were a little slower. They removed some more of his bandages and scheduled him to return on Friday for another check-up.

Update July 24, 2010
Benjamin's lung doctor replaced his trach with a 4cm, which means the next step is complete removal. They have told us he won't need surgery to close the incision site. A 4x4 bandage will be placed over the trach hole and it will close up on its own with very little scarring (our bodies are amazing)!
A couple of days ago Benjamin's right arm where his first skin graft was placed was nicked in recovery after surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery nurses didn't realize how fragile his skin was (because it was looking so good) and they put a dry bandage around the nicked area. When his regular nurses did their dressing changes, his skin had dried to the bandage and was ripped off in several places :( It was extremely painful for Benjamin and also very discouraging. The doctor has evaluated his arm and re-bandaged it correctly. We are praying there were enough skin cells in those areas to promote growth without having to go in for more skin grafts. Also, after opening up his leg bandages, an area around his knee where the skin graft may have sluffed-off was discovered. They are treating that also in hopes it won't need re-grafting either. Please be in agreement with us that both of these areas will heal quickly and he will stay on target for release this next week.

Update July 22, 2010
Benjamin had his 5th (and hopefully, last) surgery yesterday to re-graft an area on the back of his right arm. The doctor said it went very well. The donor skin for his arm was taken from the back side of his right leg. Because his skin in the burn areas are so fragile, he came back from surgery with his entire arm bandaged (apparently some got nicked when transferring him around). Based on past surgeries, the doctor will leave the new skin graft wrapped for at least three days and then inspect its progress. We know we are getting closer to being discharged from the hospital - just not sure when yet. Benjamin's lung doctor left orders to reduce his trach to a size 4, which is the smallest size before removing the trach completely. This is great news :)
Yesterday, I was thanking the nurses for their care for Benjamin and talking to them about how hard it must be to work in the burn unit. They said actually it is very rewarding because although it's always difficult in the beginning, they actually get to see their patients improve. And then they said, "For example, look at how good Benjamin looks! When he first came in, we thought he would need a skin graft on his face (which we rarely do)... But instead, he now looks like the family pictures you brought in!" This really blessed me because although his burns looked bad we stood on God's Word for a full recovery, praying God would "make his skin fresher than a child's and return him to the days of his youth" (Job 33:24-25). The testimony of the nurses is more proof of God's intervention and divine healing!
But instead, he now looks like the family pictures you brought in!" Update July 20, 2010
Today is Benjamin's 19th birthday - the hospital isn't the best place to celebrate, but we have PLENTY to celebrate so we're making the best of it. Benjamin's doctor came in today and evaluated his leg/foot skin graft again. He said it is healing well and won't need any touch-ups (praise God)! So, tomorrow Benjamin will have his last surgery to re-graft a 2x6in place on the back of his right arm. Based on prior information, we are hoping to be released in ten days (or sooner). His pain level has increased some with physical therapy; walking on the skin-grafted leg is painful but improving with use. On another good note, all his vital monitors were removed today - now they only come in every four hours to check him. And... he has been able to keep his protein levels up after having the feeding tube removed. These are all signs of divine healing :)
Cameron came for his checkup and got some great news... his skin grafts are healing very well and next week he will probably get all bandages removed (it may even be his last appointment)!

Update July 18, 2010
Today marks our fourth week in the hospital... but we are not where we started (praise the Lord)! The doctor came by to see Benjamin today and examine his skin grafts. The leg and foot seem to be healing well; however, a patch on the back of his arm did not take and will have to be re-grafted. The doctor decided to wait a few more days to watch the leg and foot before scheduling surgery in order to do ensure there aren't any sections needing touch-up there as well. Benjamin's appetite has improved greatly - we have even gone to get "special orders" to keep his calorie and protein count up. The nurses told us he can get out of bed and move his leg now so we might try a walk down the hall later... :)
Cameron and his family are on their way back tonight. The doctor will inspect his hand and arm skin graft spots tomorrow. Cameron is healing very well also and looks great!

Update July 16, 2010
A lot can change in 24 hours! First, the doctor came in to inspect Benjamin's arm graft and decided it was time to leave it open. It looks amazing! There is an area under his arm above the elbow that has not adhered yet. They re-wrapped it and we prayed it would take so as to avoid another surgery. The throat therapist upgraded Benjamin to soft solids yesterday and by the end of the night he was drinking regular liquids (un-thickened). Their biggest goal with him is to keep his calorie intake high so we are finding things he likes and can have. We even went and got bean burritos last night (his favorite)! This morning, we had another upgrade... His lung doctor came by and changed his trach size from an 8 to a 6 centimeter. Each time they reduce it, he is one step closer to having it removed altogether! His leg/foot graft is still wrapped up. The doctor will look at it in a couple of days, but we expect nothing less than a great report.

Update July 15, 2010
Another successful surgery... Benjamin's skin graft on his leg and foot was done yesterday and other than some pain from the donor site, he was feeling well. It was nice to see his face without the feeding tube! After surgery, he had several glasses of slightly thickened juices to drink and had no problem swallowing them at all. The therapist will be by today to re-evaluate him. Hopefully he will be upgraded to more solids by the weekend.
Cameron was still doing so good after surgery, he and his parents went back to Seminole for the week and will return Monday for his checkup.

Update July 14, 2010
Cameron's surgery went very well. He received skin grafts on the top of his right hand and two small areas on both arms. He was doing so well after surgery, he even came by the hospital last night to visit with Benjamin for a little while. The doctor will inspect Cameron's new grafts on Monday at his regular appointment.
Benjamin has his second skin graft surgery today on his right leg, from the knee down to the top of his foot. Because of the size of the area, he will be confined to his bed for at least three days to keep the skin graft in place. However, yesterday Physical Therapy got him out of bed twice and he walked to the end of the hall and back with a walker. He is getting stronger everyday! Benjamin also passed his swallow test! The x-ray revealed that a flap in his throat which makes sure food and liquid go down the right pipe was being blocked by the feeding tube. So, since he can't have any food twelve hours before surgery, doctors removed his feeding tube last night. They let him begin drinking thickened liquids yesterday and will gradually get him to eat and drink more regularly after surgery today. Because nutrition plays a vital role in the healing of skin grafts, Benjamin will still have to maintain a 3,000-plus calorie diet on his own (in order to keep the feeding tube out permanently).
Both Cameron and Benjamin are exercising their own faith for a full recovery - including no scarring!

Update July 12, 2010
Cameron and his family drove back to Oklahoma City last night for his weekly appointment today. Cameron's arms and hands are healing nicely. However, there is a patch on the top of his right hand that doctors have decided need a skin graft. He will have outpatient surgery tomorrow morning to graft his hand and two other small spots on both arms (areas they decided might as well be done while in there and not leave to chance). They will use his upper thigh as a donor site. Please pray for a successful surgery and easy recovery (since he will be an outpatient).
No news yet on Benjamin's surgery for his second skin graft - either Tuesday or Wednesday (swallow test is tomorrow). But he did attempt shaving with his left hand today, which was quite an accomplishment :)

Update July 11, 2010
Being in a regular room leaves less time for writing updates! Thank you for checking in...
We have had ups and downs the past two days. Benjamin was able to stand up without being dizzy and actually walked about ten paces (with a walker) to his door and back. It was slow but invigorating! Physical Therapy is very pleased with his progress. He will have skin graft surgery on his leg/foot on Tuesday or Wednesday which will keep him in bed for almost a week. They have explained that new skin grafts are a lot like tissue paper and are very fragile - they don't want much movement as it adheres to the body. The doctor looked at his arm/hand skin graft this morning and said it looks very good (praise the Lord)! He is hopeful that the surgery this week on his leg/foot will be done in one surgery just like the arm/hand. Other than the possibility of working with small patches, the doctor projects that Benjamin will not need any other major area skin grafts. This is good news because we were told to expect 2-3 weeks of hospitalization after the "last" skin graft. The sooner he gets the last graft done, the sooner he will be released! Speech Therapy has been working on his swallow muscles so he can eat and drink regular food, so another swallow test is scheduled this week. Benjamin "feels" hungry all the time although he is getting a constant supply of calories and protein (more than he could eat on his own), but it's not the same... feeling hungry all the time can be depressing. We are continuing to fight the good fight of faith and have confidence Benjamin will make a full recovery. The process can be wearisome at times, but only because you want to do more to speed it up and there are natural limits. Thankfully, we serve a supernatural God who knows no limits! His grace is sufficient for us all.

Update July 9, 2010
More triumphs! Benjamin received an attachment for his trach that allows him to talk and be heard. Even at a whisper, it's so good to hear his voice. The attachment is also a therapy tool to strengthen his swallowing muscles. Then to top that... after seventeen days in ICU, Benjamin was moved into a regular room! Other than having to lengthen his bed, his new room is very comfortable and one step closer to the elevators (haha). His doctor will look at his skin graft in 4-5 days to see how it is taking and then make plans for surgery on his leg next week sometime. Benjamin's pain level has been moderate, but his spirits remain high and he's ready to go home.

Update July 7, 2010
Benjamin completed surgery #3 today. The doctor finished cleaning the right arm from 3rd degree burns and put on a skin graft from upper arm down to his hand. The graft came from his left thigh area, which will now heal much like his 2nd degree burns. He has been upgraded from ICU status to intermediate care (although he has not been moved out of his ICU room yet). Two other praise reports: Physical Therapy came by before surgery and Benjamin was able to stand up for a few minutes; and his left hand was left unwrapped today...it looks great. Overall, his spirits are good although he's ready to eat and drink on his own (he still has a feeding tube in his nose to help him get the necessary 3,800 calories/day needed to maintain his nutrition for skin grafting). He confesses God's Word over himself daily and we hung pictures of him playing the drums in his room to keep the vision before his eyes.

Update July 6, 2010
Benjamin has been off sedation for two days now and it's so good to be able to communicate with him. We have to read his lips but we are getting pretty good at it (most of the time). His dressing changes are painful now that he's awake. But his biggest challenge has been learning to breathe through the trach. Yesterday, his oxygen levels dropped after drinking some water. The doctors feared he had swallowed wrong and got liquid in his windpipe around the trach; but all tests came back good and his oxygen leveled out. We think it was from frequent coughing. However, they took liquids away for the day as a precaution and he is scheduled to take a swallowing test this afternoon. He is very anxious to get to drink and eat on his own. The surgery that was planned for today was postponed due to the holiday. The nurses in ICU tell us Benjamin should be getting to move to an acute care room nearby soon (out of ICU). This is good news because of his progress and those rooms allow younger visitors (his sister has not got to see him yet because she's under-age).
Cameron came for the weekend and had outpatient care on Monday. He looks very good. They reduced his bandages to below his elbows and allowed his fingers to be exposed. The burns are visible but obviously healing. The hot summer days continue to be a challenge to his sensitive skin. Doctors have said this is typical of burn victims.
In case we haven't said so lately... Thank you again for your prayers! We are all very grateful. We realize the unified prayers of God's children has quickened the healing process because His Word does not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Update July 4, 2010
Yesterday was a great day! The doctors determined Benjamin was able to be removed off ALL sedation and begin weaning him off the ventilator (connected to his trach). Within a few short hours, he was very aware of his surroundings and asking questions. The ICU room with all its machines and beeps was a little alarming for someone who's never been in the hospital before, so we explained what each tube and machine were for and assured him he was going to LIVE and not die. This morning he passed his breathing test, so they are going to remove the ventilator from his trach and replace it with an oxygen mask to give him a little more oxygen than regular air. It is very different to breathe through your throat versus your mouth or nose. It can give you the illusion you aren't breathing at all. Benjamin experienced this through the night and so he had a hard time sleeping. But since starting to write this earlier... the vent is now gone, he's alert and breathing good on the trach, and they even brought him a tray of food! Please continue to pray for peace that passes understanding and rest to his spirit.
Cameron and his parents arrived last night and since Benjamin was awake, they had quite a reunion. They are both extremely grateful (as we all are). Cameron looks very good! His face doesn't even have that "sunburned" look anymore. However, his exposed skin is very sensitive to any heat at all. Even inside an un-air-conditioned room is painful. We are praying this sensitivity will decrease quickly. Thank you for continuing to stand in prayer with us.

Update July 3, 2010
The bandages came off and Benjamin's face looks so good! There are still some deeper burns around his right eye, cheek and nose that are healing but the rest looks like a sunburn. His first full day on the trach was challenging. He doesn't like the sedation medicine at all. It's frustrating to be in a fog all the time. We will encourage them today to bring that down quite a bit to see how he does. His pain level has been pretty moderate. They now only give it to him when he asks.
Cameron and his family will be driving back today from Seminole. He has outpatient care on Monday. Thank you again for your continued prayers for full (and speedy) recovery!

Update July 2, 2010
Benjamin's surgery was successful. The ventilator was removed from his mouth and a trach was inserted in his neck (which will remain connected to the vent for awhile). He is also more alert and trying to communicate with us. However, because the trach bypasses his vocal cords, we can only read his lips. The doctors left his "mummy-wrap" on again yesterday but said it will definitely be removed today and that his face is looking very, very good. They are pleased (as are we). They also indicated his left hand and left leg are almost healed too.
Please continue to pray for peace over Benjamin. He remembers everything except this past week. He is beginning to understand his injuries and the emotions that accompany them. He was comforted when we explained that he will be back at school for 2nd year and able to do his mission trips, play the drums, and everything else on his heart.
Cameron is doing great - able to use his hands more and not needing as much pain medication. He is also anxious to see Benjamin again.

Update July 1, 2010
Yesterday was very peaceful. Benjamin remained sedated after doctors re-inserted the ventilator and seemed to be sleeping well - which was much needed after almost 24 hours of restlessness due to breathing difficulties. When we were allowed in, he was wrapped up like a mummy. The doctors got a little more aggressive on his facial burns by wrapping him in vaseline-like gauze to soak off the burn tissue. Beautiful new skin is already growing underneath! We look forward to the "revealing" today.
This afternoon, Benjamin will go into surgery to have a "trach" inserted into his neck. Through the trach, he will remain on the ventilator a few more days, and then be weaned on to something like a breathing mask over the trach area, until he is completely able to breath directly through the trach. This is not a setback. We are not discouraged to see bandages on his burns - and in the same way, we are not discouraged for him to receive anything that will help him heal. The doctors believe the trauma to his throat will heal much faster this way than by leaving a vent tube in.
We are thanking God for quick healing of his throat and burns, as well as giving peace to Benjamin during this process.

Scripture to pray: "The Lord will give you strength and bless you with peace. [For] the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you to quicken your mortal body" (Ps. 29:11, Rom. 8:11).
Update June 30, 2010
When we arrived at the hospital yesterday (after the update), we were informed Benjamin had passed his breathing test and was being taken off the ventilator! His lungs are completely healed and his blood gases look great. However, after seven hours off the ventilator, his throat began to swell. This limited his airway and caused his heart rate to jump to the 180's. His lungs are still doing wonderful, but (after waiting almost ten hours and trying other methods) the doctors decided it was best to reinsert the vent and allow his throat more time to heal. Quickly after this decision, his heart rate returned to low 100's and he is resting well. We were also informed he will have another surgery next Tuesday to continue cleaning his 3rd degree burns.
We are praying for his throat and continuing to speak God's Word over him for complete healing. God's Word does not return to Him void and He gives peace that passes all understanding.

Update June 29, 2010
Cameron went to his outpatient appointment yesterday and they put him in wound sleeves that don't have to be changed for a week! This is great progress. So he and his parents made the drive back to Seminole last night to rest there this week and get some work done. They will return for Cameron's appointment next Monday. Cameron also got to see Benjamin for the first time yesterday. We know that was very healing for him. These boys are very good friends and it's hard to see your friends in these type of situations.
Speaking of friends, we have been overwhelmed by all the support. From personal friends to complete strangers, students and staff at Rhema, and even just the nursing staff at the hospital -- all have blessed us abundantly during this time.
Benjamin continues to be on the ventilator because his throat was swollen and they were careful not to let his airway close. However, his blood gases are great indicating his lungs are healed! He is continuing his antibiotics for a lung staff infection and yesterday received a potent antibiotic for a blood staff infection. Neither of these are the resistant type - just part of the territory. Our communication with Benjamin has been better. He can answer questions through sleepy nods. The nursing staff has indicated he has more surgeries ahead but no set timeline on that yet. The burns on his face are healing very well. On one side, it looks a lot like a sunburn now instead of a burn. He will not have to have any surgeries on his face.
We are playing worship music in his room around the clock. He was a musician and worship is in his veins, so we know this will aid in the healing process. He seems to enjoy us reading scripture to him also, which we do often.

Update June 27, 2010
Today has been bittersweet... Benjamin is communicating with us through nods and some eye contact, but he has also indicated he is hurting. We have repeatedly been reading 101 healing scriptures to him from Rhema's "Christ the Healer" course that God directly said in His Word regarding healing . Each time we do this, his vitals even out and he rests more peacefully. We know God's Word is ministering to him supernaturally even as the doctors are doing their part. We will speak with his lung doctor tomorrow morning to find out when she thinks he will be ready to be off the ventilator. We believe it will be very soon :)
Cameron is scheduled to go to the hospital tomorrow for wound care and new bandages. His arms, hands, and face are healing, but still painful. He has a spot on one hand the doctors are concerned may be third degree. Please be in agreement with us that Cameron will not have any third degree burns and for Benjamin's lungs to be completely clear and removed off the ventilator.

Update June 26, 2010
Great news! Cameron was released from the hospital yesterday - 9 days earlier than first predicted! We praise God for his speedy recovery. He is at the hotel with his parents as an outpatient. He will return on Monday for wound care and new bandages. The doctors have not yet said how long the outpatient care will continue.
When we got to the hospital yesterday, Benjamin was off his ventilator! He had been trying to remove it himself so they removed it for him. He did not fully awake from the sedation before he was taken to his scheduled surgery but he tried real hard. The surgery went as expected - they removed the dead 3rd degree tissue and even found some "partial thickness" areas, which means it has new tissue underneath. Because of surgery, he was placed back on the ventilator and sedated for at least today. We are believing he will improve speedily and be completely vent-free, sedation-free by the end of the weekend.

Update June 25, 2010
The boys have been in the hospital four days now and we have seen many improvements. Cameron is up walking. He has burn sleeves on both arms from his shoulders to his fingertips. The burns on his face are healing and look a lot like a bad, blistered sunburn. He says it is painful, but he knows it is healing quickly. He has to shower and scrub the arm/hand burns daily. The doctors are hopeful to put him in sleeves that will not have to be scrubbed or changed for a week. And the best part of all... whereas the doctors first said he would be in the hospital for two weeks, they are now considering letting him out this weekend for outpatient care. If they do, they will stay in Oklahoma City for the treatments (at least for a little while).
Benjamin is improving also. He is still on a ventilator for his lungs to heal. It is set on the lowest possible setting required. He is breathing fine on his own, but they are monitoring a possible lung infection. He has opened his eyes slightly but hasn't talked to us yet; however, he has begun to move around and indicate through nods that he is aware we are there. The burns on his face are healing. They put some vaseline gauze on yesterday to soften the burns and when they removed them last night, soft new skin was already forming. He will go into surgery today to remove the 3rd degree burn tissue from his right arm (shoulder to hand) and right leg (knee to sole of foot). This is to remove anything that could get infected and to look for new tissue underneath.
Cameron's parents went to the crash site yesterday and looked at the vehicle. Without a doubt, God pulled them from this wreckage. Even the responders on site do not know how the boys survived.

Update June 23, 2010
Thank you again for praying for Benjamin and Cameron. The Apostle Paul said in many places how he treasured the prayers of others. We do also. We thought it might help your prayers to understand what happened.
Our son Benjamin has been on a trip to Alaska this past month and was returning to Tulsa after spending a couple of days with us for Father's Day. Cameron just graduated high school and was moving to live with Benjamin, Robert and Thomas. On June 21st, on their way to Tulsa in Cameron's truck loaded down with all Cameron's belongings, they hit a bit of gravel on the highway that pulled their tire to the left and caused them to graze the guardrail. Witnesses said the truck immediately flipped end over end catching fire immediately. Cameron wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was bounced around, cutting his elbow on broken glass. They rolled one and a half times before landing upside down with the cab on fire. Benjamin had his seatbelt on hanging upside-down. It was difficult to get out of that position in the fire so Cameron crawled out and ran around to get Benjamin's door open but the fire was just as bad on the outside and he couldn't get to him. By the time he ran back to the other side Benjamin had gotten out of his seatbelt and was crawling out. He then ran about 10 feet and collapsed. Cameron pulled him further away not knowing if the truck would explode. It didn't, but it was burned to the ground completely disintegrated. We believe the freon and gas caused the fast burn.
Cameron suffered second degree burns on all of both arms and hands trying to help Benjamin. He also needed stitches to his elbow and his hair and face were burned some as well. He is in a regular room undergoing treatments and is expected to be released in a couple of weeks.
Benjamin suffered second degree burns on his entire face, left hand and left shin and calf. He suffered third degree burns on his entire right arm and hand and all of his right leg and foot from the knee down. Doctors have said these areas will require skin grafts. He is in the Burn ICU for these injuries and for his lungs. He breathed in the fire so they are carefully treating this. He is completely sedated and on a ventilator to help his lungs heal. He is expected to be here one month.
As parents, we all agree: God helped pull them out! "Ministering angels have been assigned to the heirs of salvation" (Heb. 1:14). We are confident of their speedy and full recovery because as believers they have the Spirit of the Living God dwelling on the inside of them quickening, strengthening, and giving life to their mortal bodies (Rom. 8:11). And by His stripes they are healed (2 Pet. 2:24, Isa. 53:4-5).
We are thankful for their lives and are confident God's plans and purposes for their lives will be fulfilled (2 Tim. 1:9)! "No weapon formed against you shall prosper...This is the heritage of the Lord and their righteousness is from Me" says the Lord (Isaiah 54:17). A weapon was formed against Benjamin and Cameron but it shall not prosper! Our God is a miracle-working God TODAY and we shall see them fully and wholly recover. "For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us" (2 Cor. 1:20).
This was simply an accident and no one's fault. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy BUT Jesus gives life, and life more abundantly! The devil had an assignment to change the boys destinies, but God intervened and now their testimonies will be even stronger of God's delivering power! Cameron's electronics were in the backseat but none of them hit the boys. God's hand was already on the scene!
So thank you again for your words of faith and prayers of thanksgiving! "To the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (1 Tim. 1:17).
